ONCEtherewerefourchildrenwhosenameswerePeter,Susan,Edmund,andLucy,andithasbeentoldinanotherbookcalledTheLion,theWitchandtheWardrobehowtheyhadaremarkableadventure.Theyhadopenedthedoorofamagicwardrobeandfoundthemselvesinaquitedifferentworldfromours,andinthatdifferentworldtheyhadbecomeKingsandQueensinacountrycalledNarnia.WhiletheywereinNarniatheyseemedtoreignforyearsandyears;butwhentheycamebackthroughthedoorandfoundthemselvesinEnglandagain,itallseemedtohavetakennotimeatall.Atanyrate,noonenoticedthattheyhadeverbeenaway,andtheynevertoldanyoneexceptoneverywisegrown-up.
Thathadallhappenedayearago,andnowallfourofthemweresittingonaseatatarailwaystationwithtrunksandplayboxespileduproundthem.Theywere,infact,ontheirwaybacktoschool.Theyhadtravelledtogetherasfarasthisstation,whichwasajunction;andhere,inafewminutes,onetrainwouldarriveandtakethegirlsawaytooneschool,andinabouthalfanhouranothertrainwouldarriveandtheboyswouldgoofftoanotherschool.Thefirstpartofthejourney,whentheywerealltogether,alwaysseemedtobepartoftheholidays;butnowwhentheywouldbesayinggood-byeandgoingdifferentwayssosoon,everyonefeltthattheholidayswerereallyoverandeveryonefelttheirterm-timefeelingsbeginningagain,andtheywereallrathergloomyandnoonecouldthinkofanythingtosay.Lucywasgoingtoboardingschoolforthefirsttime.
Itwasanempty,sleepy,countrystationandtherewashardlyanyoneontheplatformexceptthemselves.SuddenlyLucygaveasharplittlecry,likesomeonewhohasbeenstungbyawasp.
“What’sup,Lu?”saidEdmund-andthensuddenlybrokeoffandmadeanoiselike“Ow!”
“Whatonearth-”,beganPeter,andthenhetoosuddenlychangedwhathehadbeengoingtosay.Instead,hesaid,“Susan,letgo!Whatareyoudoing?Whereareyoudraggingmeto?”
“I’mnottouchingyou,”saidSusan.“Someoneispullingme.Oh-oh-oh-stopit!”
Everyonenoticedthatalltheothers’faceshadgoneverywhite.
“Ifeltjustthesame,”saidEdmundinabreathlessvoice.“AsifIwerebeingdraggedalong.Amostfrightfulpulling-ugh!it’sbeginningagain.”
“Metoo,”saidLucy.“Oh,Ican’tbearit.”
“Looksharp!”shoutedEdmund.“Allcatchhandsandkeeptogether.Thisismagic-Icantellbythefeeling.Quick!”
“Yes,”saidSusan.“Holdhands.Oh,Idowishitwouldstop-oh!”
Nextmomenttheluggage,theseat,theplatform,andthestationhadcompletelyvanished.Thefourchildren,holdinghandsandpanting,foundthemselvesstandinginawoodyplace-suchawoodyplacethatbrancheswerestickingintothemandtherewashardlyroomtomove.Theyallrubbedtheireyesandtookadeepbreath。
“Oh,Peter!”exclaimedLucy.“DoyouthinkwecanpossiblyhavegotbacktoNarnia?”
“Itmightbeanywhere,”saidPeter.“Ican’tseeayardinallthesetrees.Let’strytogetintotheopen-ifthereisanyopen.”
Withsomedifficulty,andwithsomestingsfromnettlesandpricksfromthorns,theystruggledoutofthethicket.Thentheyhadanothersurprise.Everythingbecamemuchbrighter,andafterafewstepstheyfoundthemselvesattheedgeofthewood,lookingdownonasandybeach.Afewyardsawayaverycalmseawasfallingonthesandwithsuchtinyripplesthatitmadehardlyanysound.Therewasnolandinsightandnocloudsinthesky.Thesunwasaboutwhereitoughttobeatteno’clockinthemorning,andtheseawasadazzlingblue.Theystoodsniffinginthesea-smell.
“ByJove!”saidPeter.“Thisisgoodenough.”
Fiveminuteslatereveryonewasbarefootedandwadinginthecoolclearwater.
“ThisisbetterthanbeinginastuffytrainonthewaybacktoLatinandFrenchandAlgebra!”saidEdmund.Andthenforquitealongtimetherewasnomoretalking,onlysplashingandlookingforshrimpsandcrabs.
“Allthesame,”saidSusanpresently,“Isupposewe’llhavetomakesomeplans.Weshallwantsomethingtoeatbeforelong.”
“We’vegotthesandwichesMothergaveusforthejourney,”saidEdmund.“AtleastI’vegotmine.”
“Notme,”saidLucy.“Minewereinmylittlebag.”
